Design
All significant features of the Handy Mix Scraper can be operated with one hand. A dial on the handle allows you to increase the speed with your thumb gradually.
The speed setting is displayed on an illuminated LCD display even when the mixer is paused. We appreciated the pause button for ingredients addition because it also paused the timer.
We underestimated how much we’d enjoy the ability to track our mixing times. We’d consider it an optional feature worth splurging on for a serious chef.
Changing attachments on some hand mixers can be a chore. The scraper beaters and dough hooks on the Breville one are side-specific. The lip on one of the beaters and dough hooks corresponds to a picture on the mixer.
Before the attachments snap into place, you must align them with the grooves. It’s not difficult if you understand that these attachments are side-specific. Due to the trigger release mechanism on the Breville, extensions can be removed with one hand and caught with the other.
Breville considered every aspect of this model, from visibility to timing and one-handed operation. There is little to criticize. We were only concerned with two things. To begin, it was the heaviest model we tested, weighing in at 4 pounds. It may become too heavy if you have limited arm or wrist strength.
Second, there is the issue of scraper beaters’ durability. They feature a rubber coating on the bottom quarter of the beater, significantly reducing noise. We had no problems with them, but they were only used for a few weeks.
Other users have reported that the rubber on the beaters peels off within a year or two of purchase. This mixer is covered by a one-year limited warranty that covers this issue if it occurs within the first year of purchase. However, you may need to purchase new beaters if it does not.
Performance
The Breville Handy Mix Scraper Hand Mixer features a 240-watt direct current motor. It’s remarkable how much functionality Breville crammed into this hand mixer.
It features nine speeds compatible with all attachments, including whisks, scraper beaters, and dough hooks. Several other hand mixers we tested reserved the highest speeds for the whisks only.
It quickly switches between nine speeds to perform various tasks such as creaming butter, mixing chunky doughs, and gently folding batters without straining. Additional features—a timer, a pause button, and a light that shines into the bowl—help save time and eliminate some guesswork associated with a high-stakes bake.
There is a count-up timer on the top of the unit that keeps track of how long you’ve been mixing things for precise baking. When you pause the timer, the mixer also pauses and saves its current speed when you resume operations.
The dial speed adjustment makes finding the optimal speed a breeze. A pause button enables you to add ingredients while maintaining the mixing time. Additionally, the LCD display is bright and legible. We adore the release of the trigger. It was a breeze to use. Additionally, there is an ergonomic electrical plug with a space for your finger to rest when removing the plug.
There is one final feature that is easy to overlook. The Breville Handy Mix Scraper recognizes IQ Beater Mode. Essentially, this feature detects the type of attachment being used and adjusts the torque and speed settings automatically to match the beater type. While using the mixer, you are unaware that this is occurring. This explains why we had no issues using the attachments on the thicker mixes.
Cleaning
To clean, unplug the motor base and, if necessary, wipe it down with a damp cloth. All accessories are dishwasher safe! Cleanup is a breeze! There are few crevices or cracks in which frosting or batter can become trapped, making cleanup a breeze. Remember that due to reports of silicone-coated beaters peeling, we recommend gentle hand washing to prolong their life.
We adored the plastic storage case that was included. It securely holds all of the attachments, including the power cord. After that, the mixer snaps into place on top. We’ve had mixers with attachments strewn about the kitchen, and this design was ideal for storing everything when not in use.
Should you buy Breville BHM800SIL Handy Mix Scraper Hand Mixer?
The Breville has enough power, the right features and attachments, and valuable extras like a mixing light. Excellent construction quality. Even though it is one of the priciest hand mixers on the market, it is well worth the investment.
The Breville mixer was the simplest to operate and clean, with a convenient quick-release for beaters and a snap-on storage case for neatly consolidating its attachments.
This handy mix scraper hand mixer is ideal for everyone. Professional chefs and bakers rely on this exact model because it possesses sufficient power to complete all cooking and baking tasks with ease.
