KitchenAid 9-Speed Digital Hand Mixer

Hand mixers, such as the KitchenAid 9-Speed Hand Mixer, give you the freedom to work with doughs, batters, and frostings. They’re a good compromise between manual stirring and a larger, more expensive stand mixer.

Today’s models should be quiet, powerful, and capable of blending, mixing, and whipping your favorite recipes. KitchenAid’s stand mixers serve as the standard for a wide variety of kitchen appliances. We wanted to see if the hand mixer could match that level of quality. Please continue reading to learn how it performed in our tests.

Design

The KitchenAid 9-Speed Hand Mixer features a one-handed design that makes it easy to use. The on/off switch is located on the side and is operated with your thumb. The speed controls are located adjacent to the button and are easily pressed with one hand.

The speed level is indicated on an LCD display. Rather than displaying a numerical value, it uses a bar display that increases in size as the speed increases. The lights have corresponding numbers above them, but they are not as legible as other models.

The detach button is also located on the handle and is accessed by pressing it with the thumb. Except for the whisk and blending rod, the attachments are side-specific. One of the beaters and dough hooks has a lip that must be inserted into the appropriate hole.

The holes are labeled with images that indicate which beater goes in which hole. As long as you are aware of the side-specific nature of these attachments, they are quick and straightforward to use.

Finally, there is the electrical cord, which is secured to either the right or left side. This convenient feature enables comfortable operation regardless of your handedness. Additionally, we appreciate the rubber cord strap. Once the court is coiled, the strap is wrapped around it to secure it. This prevents the cord from taking up additional storage space while being stored.

Performance

The KitchenAid’s nine speeds offer plenty of versatility, particularly for devoted chefs who value precision in their mixing. We did discover that for thicker mixes, we needed to increase the speed. KitchenAid comes standard with beaters, a whisk, and dough hooks. Additionally, it includes a rod for blending liquids.

The hand mixer’s back, or heel, is designed to be used as a stand. We used it extensively and had no issues with the mixer tipping over.

If a hand mixer is to replace a stand mixer truly, it must blend through thick batters and mixes. Three recipes — cookie dough, rice pudding, and bread dough — were used to validate this model. Each presented the KitchenAid with a unique challenge.

We started with cookie dough, mainly due to its delectability. We wanted to see how well KitchenAid creamed the butter and mixed the wet and dry ingredients. First, we neglected to defrost the butter in advance, which meant it came straight from the freezer. While microwaved, it remained harder than usual. However, this presented the KitchenAid with a unique challenge.

We creamed the butter and sugars using the beaters. Speed recommendations are included in the instruction manual based on the type of mixture. According to those instructions, this model should have produced cookie dough on level three. The KitchenAid was unable to combine the butter at the recommended speed. We had to increase the speed a few notches due to the butter sticking to the beaters.

However, once the butter reached level six, it began mixing and creaming. Additionally, we noticed that the entire unit began to shake slightly due to the additional power required to overcome the resistance of the butter. It became somewhat louder, but not noticeably so.

We used the KitchenAid’s single whisk to combine the dry ingredients. It works flawlessly with no issues. The last step was to combine the wet and dry ingredients. We reinstalled the beaters and increased the speed to the recommended three. It performed admirably until approximately half of the dry mix was added.

At this point, the mixture became excessively thick. As directed, we substituted dough hooks for the beaters. Although the dough hooks mixed well, the KitchenAid began shaking violently, just as it had done with the butter. It also became louder, but not significantly so.

Cleaning

All accessories are included with the KitchenAid in a canvas storage bag. The bag is divided into compartments. On the other hand, many other mixers have a plastic storage bin that houses the attachments and doubles as a stand for the motor unit.

We discovered that the plastic storage bin is more convenient to store than the KitchenAid’s bag. The bag is closeable with a drawstring, but it isn’t easy to close and slide open.

On the other hand, the cord strap does an excellent job of securing the cord during storage. Dishwasher-safe accessories are included.

Should you buy KitchenAid 9-Speed Digital Hand Mixer?

The iconic KitchenAid nine-speed hand mixer is a sturdy, lightweight whisk available in a rainbow of vibrant colors. Included are four different stainless steel accessories, including beaters, dough hooks, a whisk, and a stick blender.

These are packaged in a small canvas bag. The whisk is well-balanced, lightweight, and features an easy-to-use electronic speed switch. It performed admirably in every test we gave it. This is our most expensive whisk, but it delivers in spades and is well worth the price.
