How to cook brown rice in electric pressure cooker

Let us discuss how to cook brown rice in an electric pressure cooker effortlessly. You are all aware that I am currently fascinated with my Instant Pot and have designed various electric pressure cooker dishes with my new Instant Pot.

The 45-minute stovetop cooking time for brown rice made preparing it a burden. I would cook a large quantity, babysit it on the stove, and then create a massive mess on the stove as well.

With this straightforward pressure cooker brown rice recipe, I can make brown rice in the instant pot in half the time without having to closely monitor it, which is a win for me every time! Plus, every time I make this simple recipe, the rice will turn out perfectly.

What is Brown Rice?

Brown rice is unpolished whole grain rice in which the bran, germ, and aleurone layer have not been removed, unlike the refined white rice that is commonly consumed.

Brown rice is the exact grain as white rice, but it is higher in fiber and has more nutrients.

Typically, a pot of brown rice requires about an hour of simmering on the stovetop but making Brown Rice in an Instant Pot requires only half the time!

Health Benefits Of Brown Rice

Brown rice is an alternative to white rice. Especially if you are accustomed to white rice, brown rice may not appeal to your taste buds. However, the comprehensive list of health benefits may persuade you to adopt gradual dietary modifications and increase your health.

It could help diabetes management

Brown rice may be advantageous for diabetics and hypoglycemics. It has a low glycemic index, which may reduce insulin spikes and stabilize blood sugar levels in the body. A study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition found that it may be rich in phytic acid, fiber, and essential polyphenols. Unlike white rice, brown rice is a complex carbohydrate that aids in the delayed release of sugar.

It may facilitate digestion

Brown rice is a beneficial grain that may be simply incorporated into the daily diet to improve digestion. It may help control bowel motions and feel full due to the fiber content. A study comparing the effects of brown and white rice on Digestion revealed that the bran layer on brown rice may have retarded emptying, hence increasing stool volume. In addition to relieving constipation and colitis, fiber also alleviates other ailments, such as constipation and diarrhea.

Provide potential antioxidants

According to a 2018 study, the more a grain is milled, the more beneficial it loses the phytocompounds. Due to this, rice is likely to have more phytochemicals with antioxidant activity, especially when white rice or other grains have been severely processed.

In addition, the grain may be abundant in flavonoids such as flavones and tricin, which contribute to its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants may relieve stress, eliminate pollutants, and prevent certain health disorders.

May aid in reducing obesity

Brown rice is a food that has been demonstrated to aid in weight control for many individuals battling obesity. In this regard, a study found that whole grains, such as brown and black rice, may positively impact the body in terms of body mass index and fat reduction. They may also increase the activity of glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme associated with an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol levels in obese people. Another comparative animal investigation shows the germinated variety’s anti-obesity properties.

Possibility of Neuroprotective Effects

Diets high in cholesterol may increase the risk of neurodegenerative illnesses and decrease cognitive ability. By replacing cholesterol with healthier elements, such as fiber, this rice may lower cholesterol levels. A 2016 study concluded that germinated brown rice might possess neuroprotective properties, protecting the brain from oxidative stress. This may make it especially advantageous for those at risk for Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.

Might Enhance Maternal Health

Brown rice that has sprouted may be useful for the mental health of nursing mothers. According to an investigational study published in the European Journal of Nutrition, breastfeeding mothers who consumed brown rice had a reduction in mood disturbances, depressive states, and exhaustion. It has also been proposed that consuming this rice during lactation may boost the body’s resistance to stress and the immune system.

Why Should You Cook Brown Rice In An Electric Pressure Cooker?

Some people believe that brown rice is healthier than white rice. Brown rice has more fiber and protein than found in white rice. It also has a lower glycemic index, so it will not spike your blood sugar as much as white rice would.

Cooking brown rice in an electric pressure cooker can save you time and energy. It takes less time to cook brown rice in an electric pressure cooker than on the stovetop or a pot with a lid.

There are many reasons why you should cook brown rice in an electric pressure cooker:

  • It cooks rice faster than traditional cooking methods.
  • It has a better flavor because it does not need constant stirring like other cooking methods do.
  • It is a healthier option than white rice, as it contains more fiber, Vitamin B1, and magnesium.

If you are looking for ways to make your life easier or have some time saving tricks up your sleeve, this article might be of interest to you.

Cooking brown rice in an electric pressure cooker is easy and can save you time when making meals quickly. An electric pressure cooker is also convenient as it will automatically release the pressure once the rice is done cooking. This means that there is no need to worry about overcooking or undercooking your food, which can happen with stovetop models. A final benefit of using an electric cooker is that it cooks rice faster than any other method, so even if you are not in a hurry, it is worth considering for its efficiency.

Varieties of brown rice

Like white rice, there are numerous varieties of brown rice available for purchase. For instance, long-grain brown rice (such as basmati rice) yields more separated grains of rice after cooking, whereas short-grain brown rice has a stickier and more chewy texture when fully cooked.

For this recipe, I evaluated Mogami brand long grain brown rice and Botan brand Calrose short grain brown rice. I was pleasantly surprised to see that both kinds produced excellent results with a 1:1 ratio of water to brown rice.

How Much Brown Rice Can A Pressure Cooker Cook?

I have never cooked more than a few cups in my 6-quart Instant Pot because I do not require that much food. Nonetheless, if you need to prepare more, you may cook up to 5 cups of dry rice with this size equipment. Maintain the rice-to-water ratio, and you will be fine.

Ensure that the pot is not filled over the halfway point. A larger electric pressure cooker has a greater capacity.

Water to brown rice ratios to use

Here is a breakdown of the dimensions I employed for each variety:

  • 1 dry measuring cup (200 grams) of short-grain brown rice: 8 fluid ounces of water (240 grams)
  • 2 dry cups of short-grain brown rice (400 grams): 16 ounces of liquid (480 grams)
  • 1 dry cup of long-grain brown rice (178 grams): 8 ounces of liquid (240 grams)
  • 2 dry measuring cups (356 grams) of long-grain brown rice; 16 fluid ounces of water (480 grams)

I only tested 1 and 2-cup recipes for both kinds. If you want to create more brown rice at once, I recommend beginning with the same 1:1 ratio and adding or subtracting water based on the rice’s ultimate texture.

How to season brown rice?

Do you require a variety of Seasoned Brown Rice Recipes? Here are some of my preferred methods:

  • Add some garlic salt – so simple and very flavorful!
  • Salt and Parmesan cheese are added. This may sound like an unusual combo, yet it is one of our favorites.

Ingredients

To prepare this delicious and straightforward quick pot side dish, you need three ingredients.

  • Brown Rice – long grain brown rice not instant rice
  • Water – I usually use water but chicken broth works great too
  • Garlic Salt – I love using garlic salt in this recipe as it brings out the flavor in the rice, but you can also use salt or minced garlic as well.

How to cook brown rice in an electric pressure cooker

Using this simple procedure, you may effortlessly prepare food for a crowd. Every time, the grains are cooked to perfection. Let’s get going!

  1. Wash the rice thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
  2. Add 1 cup of water into the pressure cooker pot. Put the lid on and turn the heat to high. When steam starts coming out of the vent, reduce the heat to medium-high.
  3. Once the steam comes out of the vent, place the rice inside the pot. Close the lid tightly.
  4. Turn the heat back to high and wait for 5 minutes. After that, turn the heat down to low and let the pressure cooker do its job. Cook for 10 minutes.
  5. Open the lid carefully and check if the rice is cooked through. If not, close the lid again and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and serve.
  7. Enjoy!

How Long Does It Take To Cook Brown Rice In An Electric Pressure Cooker?

My brown rice was cooked for 20 minutes, plus additional time to relieve the pressure, regardless of grain size. In roughly 30 minutes, brown rice may be prepared astonishingly quickly.

What pressure setting to use and how to release pressure?

You can use an Instant Pot model or any other electric pressure cooker brand if you adhere to this recipe’s pressure settings and pressure release time. Notably, I did NOT use the “rice” preset, but the “Manual Pressure Cooking” setting on high for 20 minutes with natural release. I also disabled the stay warm function. The pressure and timing worked well with both short grain and long grain rice.

How to store leftover brown rice

It is possible to prepare a large quantity of brown rice using this approach, which is an excellent pressure cooker.

Before refrigerating cooked rice, it must be cooled to room temperature for optimum storage. Rice for meal preparation should be stored in shallow, sealed containers.

Cooked brown rice can be stored in the refrigerator for approximately five days. To maintain the rice’s freshness, reheat only the amount required for the meal.

Troubleshooting the recipe

  • The best method for measuring rice is with a scale. This will provide more exact measurements for the brown rice than the rice scoop included with the Instant Pot or a standard measuring cup. Not every measuring cup or spoon is the same.
  • If your rice is too soggy or watery, lower the amount of water by 1/4 cup or reduce the cooking time by 1 minute, then retest it.
  • If your rice is too complicated and dry, increase the water by 1/4 cup before cooking it next time, and the cooking time.

How To Cook Brown Rice In An Electric Pressure Cooker - FAQs

Rice cookers are compatible with all rice varieties, including white, brown, long-grain, short-grain, jasmine, basmati, and wild rice. They can also be used to create quinoa and oatmeal, among other grains. Be sure to adjust the water-to-rice ratio correctly, especially if your rice cooker has only one set.

Pressure Prepare Rice: Add 1 cup (230 grams) of rice and 1 cup (250 milliliters) of cold water to the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. Close the lid and adjust the Venting Knob to the Sealing position. Pressure Cook under High Pressure for 3 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of Natural Release.

The optimal ratio for cooking rice is 2 cups rice to 4 cups water. If this is your first time, I recommend beginning with this. Do not forget to add salt; it makes a significant difference in the flavor of brown rice. I always add salt directly to the rice cooker after the rice and water have been added.

I utilize two glasses of water for every cup of rice. Combine the rice, water, and one teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil in a medium saucepan. Next, it is cooking time! Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer the rice for around 45 minutes until it is soft and has absorbed the water.

Add the proper quantity of water. A decent rule of thumb for preparing brown rice is to increase the amount of water by 50 percent over the suggested amount. Therefore, instead of using one cup of water per cup of rice, you should use one and a half cups of water to account for the variation in texture.

Rinse and Toast Brown Rice for Better Flavor

I rinsed the rice before cooking, removing any grit or dust accumulated during processing. Rinsing improves the texture of the rice; it is less critical than rinsing white rice, but it still helps distinguish each grain.

Long-grain, short-grain, brown, and white rice can all be cooked in a pressure cooker. (It also makes a delicious risotto.) Regardless of the rice I am preparing, I always use a 1:1 ratio to water or broth.

Yes, brown rice cooked can be frozen. I enjoy freezing cooked rice to be reheated quickly for supper. This page on How to Freeze rice has all my tips and methods, including instructions on reheating frozen rice.

This rice can be kept frozen for up to three months.

Conclusion

Brown rice has a delightfully nutty, opulent flavor when cooked to perfection. Therefore, it is essential to know how to cook it properly. When brown rice is cooked in a pressure cooker, it releases these flavors and acquires the proper texture. Remember to soak brown rice for at least two to three hours before cooking, as it is not processed like white rice and requires more time to soften.
