Read MoreUpside-down puff pastry tarts are a delightful twist on the classic pastry, offering a delicious combination of flaky puff pastry, caramelized fruit, and sweet glaze. These tarts are prepared by arranging sliced fruit, such as apples, pears, or peaches, on the bottom of a baking dish or tart pan, then topping them with a layer of butter and sugar. Puff pastry is then placed on top of the fruit and baked until golden brown and crispy.
Once baked, the tarts are inverted to reveal the beautifully caramelized fruit on top, creating a stunning presentation. With their simple yet elegant appearance and irresistible flavor, upside-down puff pastry tarts are perfect for any occasion, from casual gatherings to formal dinners.

Cooking Time
Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 2-3 medium-sized apples, pears, or peaches, peeled and thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Directions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease four individual tart pans.
- Prepare Fruit: In a bowl, toss the thinly sliced fruit with lemon juice to prevent browning. Set aside.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a sharp knife or pastry cutter, cut out four circles slightly larger than the diameter of your tart pans.
- Arrange Fruit: In each tart pan, drizzle a tablespoon of melted butter and sprinkle a tablespoon of brown sugar. Arrange the sliced fruit in a single layer on top of the butter and sugar, overlapping slightly if needed. Sprinkle ground cinnamon and nutmeg over the fruit.
- Top with Puff Pastry: Carefully place a puff pastry circle over the fruit in each tart pan, gently tucking the edges down along the sides.
- Bake: Transfer the tart pans to the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and the fruit is tender and caramelized.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the tarts from the oven and let them cool in the pans for a few minutes. Carefully invert each tart onto a serving plate or platter, allowing the caramelized fruit to become the topping. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
- Serve: Serve the upside-down puff pastry tarts warm, either on their own or with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
