Can Ice Be Put Into A Blender: Five Useful Points To Know

We use blenders to blend and shred ingredients like fruits, vegetables, and drinks. But what about more complex substances like ice? You want to crush ice cubes more quickly and efficiently, but you’re afraid your blender can’t handle it. Can ice be blended in a blender?

By high-quality blenders, I refer to the more expensive models with more potent and variable-speed motors. The blade must also be durable and made of premium materials so that it does not become dull or damaged after blending. 

High-end blenders also lose strength and capacity after prolonged use. However, this does not mean standard devices cannot function with ice cubes. 

They can still process a portion of the ice cubes if they use the correct techniques and follow the blending tips discussed in the following section. 

How To Make Ice Cubes For Blending? 

If your device is still functional and you are confident that it can easily crush the ice cubes, don’t be afraid to use it to save time and effort. However, large and complex ice cannot be placed in the device and is expected to function. Before blending, you can prepare the ice in the following ways to make it easier for the blender to crush them.

If you do not have an ice cube tray, place the ice cubes in a clean plastic or paper bag. Fold and seal the bag before placing it in the refrigerator. Thus, the ice cubes will not stick together and will be ready for their subsequent use. 

How Does One Crush Ice Using a Blender? 

Compared to the food processor and the rolling pin, the blender is one of the most effective ice-making tools. First, place the fresh ice cubes in the container, followed by a swift water pour. 

When preparing a smoothie or alcoholic beverage, you can combine the juice or liquid with the ice cubes. However, do not overfill the container with ice and liquid, as it may spill during blending. 

Now cover the container and begin pulsing. If your blender’s power can be adjusted, pulse slowly for the first few seconds before gradually increasing the power to crush the ice. 

Continue pulsing until the chunks are visible, then stop. Too much blending will cause the ice to melt into water. Pour the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove any remaining liquid. Using clean water, you can remove the chunks by hand. 

If you hear unusual sounds or the engine fails, stop immediately and disconnect the power cable.

Ensure that you add a substantial amount of cold water to aid the device in easier ice formation. The liquid should cover the ice completely. Blend small amounts of ice with a small amount of liquid at a time if you do not want your ice to be watery. 


The greater the power of your blender, the easier it is to crush ice. An appliance with 400 watts can work with ice cubes, but only if they are of small size and proportion. Blending may also cause damage to the motor. Therefore, you should opt for higher-powered models, such as 400-watt or 1,000-watt blenders. 

Using the blender to crust soft ingredients is still possible, but liquid must be added for more complex foods. Without liquid, the substance will become lumpy.

The principle is that soft foods and ingredients go in first, followed by solid ones. Before adding the water to the ice cubes, the water should be poured first.

Any ingredient that is super hard is not ideal for use in the blender. This includes large ice cubes and frozen fruits. Super-hard ingredients can damage the blender’s blades, and require them to be replaced sooner than you expect.
