How To Make Tomato Sauce From Fresh Tomatoes

In the past I have made a little tomato sauce as I got enough tomatoes, but didn’t put much into it. I would put up a few quarts, but that’s it.

After last year’s tomato season, I ran across a Homesteading DVD that talked about seasoning your own tomato sauce and canning it. I can’t believe I had not thought of that. We love spaghetti, marinara or seasoned tomato sauce (whatever you want to call it). I made a point to plan my tomato patch for the following year and be prepared to put up as much seasoned tomato sauce as I could.

This sauce is great for Spaghetti, soups, stews and chili. Canning allows you to enjoy the taste of summer all year round. More on canning my tomato sauce later…

So, are you ready to learn how to make tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes?

Step 1.

  • Wash your tomatoes and gather your supplies.
  • If you are planning on canning your tomatoes you will need a water bath canner (either for quarts or pints) and jars (with lids and rings). These are easy to find at Walmart, Dollar General stores or local grocery stores in the summer time. A Ball Blue Book is beneficial too.
  • Blender for chopping or blending your tomatoes for a the sauce.
  • Large pot for cooking your seasoned tomato sauce.
  • Seasonings.

Step 2.

  • If you want your tomatoes peeled, submerge your tomatoes in boiling water just until the skins begin to peel then transfer the tomatoes into cold water to stop the cooking process. Once cool enough to handle, peel the tomatoes and cut out the bad spots.
  • If you don’t care to peel your tomatoes, just cut out the bad spots and cut into pieces. Fill your blender with the good tomato pieces (maybe cut in half or fourths for large tomatoes) and blend away.
  • I have made tomato sauce both ways, peeling and then blending and just blending the tomato peels and all. I have had good results with both methods.
  • I buy spaghetti seasoning from Sam’s Club and use that as my seasoning. The amount depends on how many tomatoes you have. Italian seasoning is a good one to use to season your sauce. You can also add chopped onion, bell peppers to your sauce. Cook it down until some of the water evaporates and the consistency is as you like it.
  • Use this tomato sauce over pasta, in lasagna, manicotti or soups…
