Good canning jars are indispensable for preserving food and making jelly and jam. Good canning jars can be reused regardless of age, provided they are not chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged.
Mason jars are the ideal canning jars. The jars are manufactured by several companies, including Ball, Golden Harvest, Bernardin, and Kerr. Jar size is the most critical consideration. Produce should be stored in jars larger than 12 oz. Typically, smaller sizes are reserved for jams and jellies.
Now let’s examine the jar types and sizes in greater detail. I will also specify a variety of jars to avoid at all costs.
Why are the jars called canning jars?
The term “canning” is derived from the word “can,” which is a shortened version of “canister.” Metal or glass may be used to create canisters (or even plastic or cardboard these days.)
What differentiates Mason jars from canning jars?
Actual Mason jars have a wider rim that provides a more effective sealing surface, though they are remarkably like commercially available jars. Additionally, they are improved to resist cracking and breaking under the high pressure required for canning.
Sizes of Canning Jars
Mason Jar Size
Use for canning fruits, vegetables, or meats, but not for jam or jelly as they would not gel properly in that size jar.
Use for canning fruits, vegetables, or meats, but not for jam or jelly. If you put jam or jelly into a quart jar, chances are good it will not gel properly.
This size jar is suitable for anything, fruits, vegetables, meats, jam, or jelly.
Can be used for anything, but mainly for jam and jelly.
Used mainly for jam, jelly, and pickles. 8oz jars are made in many different shapes.
Used almost exclusively for jam and jelly. 4oz jars are made in many different shapes.
Tips: If you attempt to use a container larger than a pint, your jelly will likely not set correctly. Even though I have successfully made jelly in pint jars, I recommend sticking to 12-ounce or smaller containers. Moreover, more oversized items will not fit in the refrigerator once they are opened.
Types of Jars
There are two basic types of Mason jars:
- Regular mouth: The inner diameter of the mouth of these jars is 2-3/8 inches, and the outer diameter is 2-3/4 inches.
- Wide mouth: The inner and outer diameters of the mouth on these jars are 3 inches and 3-3/8 inches, respectively. These are ideal for pickling and canning fruits, vegetables, and meats because they are easier to fill.
How We Evaluate
After scouring the market and researching over sixty brands, models, and varieties of canning jars, we selected the ten finest for this exhaustive review. To adhere to food safety standards, canning jars generally adhere to specific parameters and standards. Nevertheless, there is a degree of variation among styles, designs, and implements that distinguishes each jar. For this review, we chose to examine various types, including some brands you are familiar with.
Evaluation and Results of Tests
All these contenders were subjected to exhaustive, thorough, and rigorous testing over several weeks of repeated use by our testers because a high-quality canning jar should withstand multiple kitchen seasons of service and a variety of tasks. Regarding food safety, we assigned greater weight to the seal testing metric. Form, versatility, and durability were also crucial considerations. We believe that the combination of these qualities creates an imposing canning jar.
Form, in the eyes of our testers, refers to the general shape, size, and design of each tested jar. There was a preference for models with a wide mouth because they are easier to pack models with vertical sidewalls. After all, they are easier to unpack and models with squared sides because they store better on a shelf or in a canner. The size was also a factor, though it was less significant than the above criteria. Nevertheless, our testers also knew that sure jars are purposefully designed to perform specific functions.
The seal is arguably the most important criterion for testing canning jars, as it guarantees the safety and freshness of your preserved foods. To comprehensively understand each model’s ability to produce a seal, we tested each model using both the water bath and pressure canning methods. Frequently, the intense conditions of a pressure canner can expose flaws in the lid components and, occasionally, the glass of each jar.
In some instances, canning jars can be designed for a particular purpose. For example, a “mold” jar or “terrine” is designed with straight but slightly slanted walls that allow the contents to be removed in one piece by ‘plopping’ out when turned upside down. However, most of us are not looking for highly specialized vessels for epicurean curiosities. It stands to reason that you would want it to serve multiple purposes when purchasing a canning jar.
Part of the reason that canning jars are so prevalent in the kitchen is that some of them can last for a long time. Others will not survive the first round of pressure canner batch processing. While it’s difficult to predict which models will stand the test of time, our testers paid close attention to factors such as glass thickness and component quality to determine which jars are designed for long-term use and which are better for one-time use.
Factors to consider when choosing the best jars for canning
You may use canning jars of various sizes because they enable you to preserve all of your favorite foods. Quite a few people are looking for canning jars that accommodate small batches of items, but you must have jars that accommodate large sets. You can purchase all of your jars at once, and it will be much simpler to acquire all of the jars you require.
The lids are the most critical component of the process, and you must purchase them frequently to ensure that every jar is sealed correctly. Jars must be filled with a perfectly clean lid during the hermetic process. The lids will remove all air, and many people can be canning without the proper lids. Fitting lids will prevent bacteria from entering the jar and must be impossible to open.
Purchasing A Huge Pack
You must purchase many more convenient jars because they will help you get all of the desired items. Canning is a labor-intensive process that can be performed at home, and you can purchase more than enough jars to can multiple items simultaneously. When you use various jars, your output will be significantly higher, and you will have enough spares to can as many items as necessary. You will notice how much easier it is to complete your canning when you have a large set, which must be purchased before the canning season.
What Should the Glass Thickness Be?
Your jars’ glass must be thick if you wish to keep them in good condition for the foreseeable future. Your jars will not function properly if you do not purchase thick glass, and you will notice that any jar with thin walls will fail because it will shatter under the extreme heat required to close the seal. It would be best if you did not make the jar so thin that it can only be used once when it can be recycled multiple times.

The two-piece lids appear to make a tight seal and are compatible with any jar with a regular mouth. Simply put, the Verones were the unanimous favorite among our tasters for jelly and jam storage.

5. Le Parfait Familia Wiss Terrine - 1L Wide Mouth French Glass Mason Jar
Regarding quart containers, we loved the Le Parfait Familia Wiss Terrine jars. Compared to other containers of a similar size, these 110mm opening, vertical walls, all the way to the rim, did packing and emptying a breeze. A French company designed this model, so milliliters are the standard unit of measurement. The American imperial quart, which contains 32 ounces, is a rough approximation of the metric liter used in the Wiss Terrine. However, these jars are more extensive than their American counterparts.
Due to their larger capacity and round design, our tests showed that only four Wiss Terrines would fit in a standard 5-quart pressure canner. The added capacity, however, is almost sufficient to make up for it. The two-piece lid of these jars is unlike that of other models because it has a fully “capped” screw top rather than the more common ring-style lid. This leads to a more reliable seal and longer-lasting, less warped parts. However, one drawback is that they are among the most expensive products we tested. Consider the Le Parfait Terrines if you value quality and functionality above cost per jar.
- 32 Fluid Ounces
- Two-piece metal sealing cap and metal screw lid
- Highest quality preserving
- Reusable and durable
- Full metal screw lid
- Very large opening
- Smooth and vertical walls
- Secure lid with full closure
- Durable and high-quality
- Not universally sized
- More expensive
6. Bormioli Rocco - Set of 4 Pots 500 ml
Like other European brands, the Bormioli Rocco Quattro Stagioni jars feature a high degree of functionality and design elements that cater to more epicurean tastes. While the Quattros are an ounce larger in capacity than a standard American pint, their squared sidewalls and regular mouth lid are otherwise consistent with the traditional pint. However, they can be used in a normal pressure canner like any other pint jar.
A further feature that stands out on this model is the one-piece screw top lids, which are fully enclosed caps that are like but of higher quality than the North Mountain quarts. These included lids are more expensive to replace than standard issue bands (also compatible with the Quattros), but they last longer and provide a more reliable seal. And instead of being dull gray, they stand out thanks to their striking “gold” color. Bormioli Rocco Quattro Stagioni pint jars are more expensive, but they’re worth it if you view food preservation as an art and a science.
- Set of 4 Pots 500 ml
- With quality
- Secure lids with high seal rate
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Quality glass
- Can be used with universal lids
- Set of 12
- Shoulder taper
- Regular mouth
7. Best for small: KAMOTA Mason Jars 10 oz
Kamota Jam Jars are more than a pint in size, with a total capacity of 10 ounces. However, this model was the clear winner for our tasters when it came to condiments like relishes, chutneys, and tapenades. These jars have a pear shape that looks great on a shelf and square sides that make them convenient to stack in a pressure canner. Despite their lack of glitz, they are perfectly adequate for preserving food in large quantities.
These jars have quality seals because of their traditional two-piece lids with a screw top band. Additionally, any regular mouth lid can be used in its place. This jar is larger than a standard pint, which makes it up for the difficulty of retrieving jams and jellies from the shoulder. There’s also the fact that the cost per jar is very low. The Kamota Jam Jars are an affordable and visually appealing choice for canning smaller items.
- 24 pieces 10 OZ mason glass jars with silver screw lids
- BPA free & food safe
- Classic and elegant design
- Versatile & Multipurpose
- Suitable for decorations and crafts
- Smooth glass
- Universally sized lids
- Tremendous value
- Reliable seal
- Shouldered top
- Smaller in size
- Less quality than others
- Dubious longevity
8. Ball Regular Mouth Quart (32 oz) Mason Jars

These canning-safe jars have many uses beyond storage, including as presents, decorative elements, craft materials, and beverage vessels. This set of glass jars is BPA-free and can be sealed for up to 18 months.
Ball jars are made with the seasoned canner, with features like volume markings on the side and a squared-off design. These regular-mouthed jars have a shoulder taper that makes packing and retrieval more difficult, but otherwise, they perform just as well as other high-end brands. The Ball Regular Mouth Quart Jar is an excellent value if you don’t need any extra features to complete your canning tasks and are instead a purist.

9. Anchor Hocking AHG17 1 Pint Home Canning Jars
Anchor Hocking Pint jars are a solid off-brand alternative that offers a simple and functional design at a reasonable price. Even though these jars don’t have the usual features—like glass markings or square sides—they still have a reliable seal because of the two-piece lid and band closure. Even regular mouth lids, which come in various sizes, fit perfectly.
Despite their profile, these jars can hold 16 ounces, making them a proper pint. For instance, the rounded shape of the glass meant that fewer jars could be processed at once in a pressure canner than would have fit had they been standard square pints. While our evaluators discovered no glaring issues, this model did not stand out as particularly strong either. Also, the Anchor Hocking Pint is an excellent option if you want a small jar without breaking the bank.
- Set of (12) 1-pint capacity canning jars with metal lids and rings
- Anchor Glass canning jars feature thick side walls for added durability and a threaded, regular mouth opening for ease of access
- Anchor Glass is a healthier choice over plastic storage; glass does not discolor, retain smells, or leach chemicals into food
- Glass jar is MADE IN THE USA and dishwasher safe; handwashing is recommended for the metal lid and ring
- Perfect for canning, crafting, and storing
- Smooth walls for easy cleaning
- Decent value
- Universal lid size
- Reliable seal
- Low-quality glass
- Sides aren't square
- Lids are tricky sometimes
- Shoulders made for difficult packing
10. SPANLA Mason Jars Canning Jars
The KitchenAid Grain Mill is a metal-constructed appliance. This machine is attractive because its exterior is made of high-quality stainless steel and is polished. It can be designed with either a satin or high-polish finish.
Depending on the grain mill model, the grind consistency varies. With the KitchenAid grain mill, you can choose 12 different grind levels to grind grains from coarse to extra fine texture. The mill has an adjustable knob that allows you to control the grind’s coarseness.
The unit is simple to assemble because it comes with an illustrated instruction manual, which you must read and adhere to. All that is required is to connect the power shaft to the grinder and then to the mill’s main body. Then, connect the front plate to the power shaft, ensuring that the knob is correctly seated on the shaft.
It also includes a cleaning brush designed to reach difficult-to-reach areas to keep your grain mill clean and organized.
Performance is dependent on how the mill is utilized. Take care not to overfill the cups with grain. It is recommended that you do not grind more than 10 cups of grain at a time. After grinding 10 cups of grains, let the mixer cool for 45 minutes. If you follow these steps, you will receive consistent results.
If you intend to do a great deal of milling, the KitchenAid Pro Stand Mixer with a metal gearbox is recommended for use with this grain mill attachment. Remember to allow the machine to cool down after 10 cups of grains.
KitchenAid has been manufacturing home appliances for decades, so you can expect the product to be high quality. Avoid using the mill to grind coffee or oily grains. Also, ensure that the mill is kept away from the dishwasher.
If you avoid doing these things, you can expect the product to provide years of dependable service.

Best jars for canning – FAQs
Mason jars, also known as canning or fruit jars, are glass jars used to preserve food through home canning. It was named after the 1858 patent holder, American tinsmith John Landis Mason. The mouth of the jar is equipped with a screw thread to accept a metal ring or “band.”
You may reuse Mason jars if they are not chipped, cracked, or otherwise compromised. Before reusing, sterilize used jars by washing them thoroughly in hot, soapy water. Always replace the lid, but reusing the ring is acceptable.
To cut a long story short, age is irrelevant. If the jars are undamaged, they will function normally. Therefore, if you find 100-year-old jars in your grandfather’s barn, you can frequently reuse them.
Mason jars can be used in the freezer, but you must take the following precautions:
- Instead of leaving 1/4 inch of headspace, as you would when canning, leave 1 to 2 inches at the top to allow for the food’s expansion as it freezes. Most Mason jars have a fill line for frozen foods underneath the ring-threaded top portion of the jar.
- Instead of tightening the lid as you usually would, leave it slightly loose.
- Either allow the food to cool before filling the jars or preheat the jars before filling them with hot liquid. Pouring a hot liquid into a cold jar may cause it to shatter. Before placing food in the freezer, it must be thoroughly cooled.
- Wide-mouth jars are recommended for freezing; if you must use regular-mouth jars with shoulders, leave 1 to 2 inches below the shoulders unfilled to allow the food to expand.
- Do not crowd them. Leave a small amount of space between the jars in the freezer, so they do not touch.
Allow frozen food jars to defrost overnight in the refrigerator. Alternately, you can thaw them on your kitchen counter if you can monitor them and refrigerate them once they are softened. You can place the jar in a pan filled with tap or warm water to expedite the process.
Caution: Neither hot water nor the microwave should ever be used to thaw frozen jars of food.
What about glass containers that are not “Mason” jars?
Use only jars made of tempered glass approved by the manufacturer for freezing when storing food in the freezer.
Canned foods can be stored in plastic containers and jars in the freezer. Leave approximately 2 inches of headspace above the food in the container to allow for expansion.
Some individuals use recycled plastic jars in the freezer, such as those used to store canned fruit and other foods, but I have never done so. In addition, you can place your food jars in the freezer without their lids and then screw on the lids once they have frozen.
Note: This is the best time to recycle those old lids, as frozen food does not need to be sealed because it is preserved by freezing. The jars only need to be airtight to maintain the integrity of the flavors.
If you have a broken or cracked food jar in the freezer, place it in a pan or the sink to thaw. When the glass has melted, remove it and put it in a bag or box before throwing it away. Broken glass should not be placed in the recycling bin, as hands and shards of separate glass recyclables could cause injury.
Mayonnaise and salad dressing jars made of glass should not be used for canning. The only exception is if the jars are designed to fit a 2-piece canning jar lid so that a good seal can be achieved. In this instance, using them for jam, jelly, or any product that does not require additional processing would be acceptable.
